Climate Change Trustee Board clears 4 projects

 

Dhaka, Sep 4 (bdnews24.com)—The government on Tuesday approved four projects with an outlay of Tk Tk 508 million to encourage activities against carbon emission and reduce carbon production through the use of solar power.The Climate Change Trustee Board under the Ministry of Environment and Forests approved these projects at a meeting at the Secretariat with Minister Hasan Mahmud in the chair.

Public Relations Officer of the ministry Mostafa Kamal Pasha told reporters that the board in its previous meeting had approved in principle a project titled ‘Mitigation and Low-Carbon Development’ and gave the final approval to the project with some modifications on Tuesday.

Under the project, solar power plants will be set up in 3,208 Union Information Service Centers (UISCs) to help them provide uninterrupted information to the rural community people. The ‘Climate Change Trust Fund’ of the ministry will finance the project.

Pasha said of the three other projects, two are related to carbon emission reduction.

The Directorate of Forests will implement the two projects – ‘Eco-Restoration of Hill Forest’ project in Cox’s Bazar district involving Tk 24.4 million and another project involving Tk 94.2 million for rehabilitation of the people who are directly dependent on the forest resources of the Madhupur forest for their livelihood.

The fourth project has been undertaken for construction and development of sustainable infrastructure in the coastal belt.

The Local Government Engineering Directorate (LGED) will implement the project in the selected areas, mostly affected by adverse impacts of global climate change, with an outlay of Tk 249.9 million.
