FLOOD: A LIFE AND DEATH ISSUE FOR THE PEOPLE OF BANGLADESH

Bangladesh is a very low lying country, with 70% of its land area being less than 1m above sea level and 80% of it being floodplain. Bangladesh receives large amounts of water passing through it with two major rivers (the Ganges and Brahmaputra) converging and forming a huge delta. Bangladesh has a monsoon climate and the annual torrential rains which result often result in the rivers exceeding their capacity and flooding; in the spring, melting snow from the Himalayas further increases the flood risks as torrents of melt water enter the rivers at their source. It is well known that flood is the part of natural cycle and it has got both positive and negative impact on the environment. Flood can be devastating to the people; it has always been an essential part of nature’s renewal process, providing many long-term positive effects as the following:

  • Revives ground water
  • Renews the wetlands
  • Returns nutrients to soil
  •  Recovers natural fish stock
  • Works on anoxia and hypoxia of wetlands.
  • Prevents erosion and maintains land mass elevation
  • Flood brings fresh water for irrigation and domestic use
  •  Increases fishery resources
  • Improves navigation of transport
  •  kills insect, washes out acid water, pushes salt water toward the sea

Negative impact of flood:

  • Economic loss
  • Flooding will lead to the damages of roads, collapse of bridges or traffic congestion, which may affect the daily operation
  • Flooding brings too much water which will cause damage to farmland.
  • People died and lose their homes
  • Flooding usually brings infectious diseases.

Thus flood has affected the people of Bangladesh living in the floodplain areas. It blesses their life by reviving the soil and providing green fields which show a ray of hope to their life. On the other hand this flood becomes a curse to them when it grasped away everything. This is how flood has an ironical impact on the people of Bangladesh.
