Geomorphological Control of Urban Land Development and Geo-environmental Settings in Chittagong City, Bangladesh

Chittagong city is the second largest metropolitan city of Bangladesh. It is a unique example in the country showing distinctive geomorphic divisions, ranging from undulating hill topography to tidal mud flats. Based on landsat and SPOT imageries, 3D-aerial photographic interpretation, and ground survey eight major geomorphic units of the city have been identified, which are Tertiary hills, piedmont and valleys, alluvial plain, old tidal plain, tidal mud plain, supra tidal plain,  natural levee and sandy beach.. The general topography of the city can broadly be divided in to two nearly equal halves following the Dhaka-Chittagong rail lines; the undulating north and plain south. Following the similar methodology the land use map of the city has also been proposed, which shows about 13 different land use types. The aim of this paper is to understand the geomorphic controls of Chittagong city on its land use pattern. The earlier growth of the city was confined to the alluvial plain lands and piedmont landscape near Sadarghat area, which later due to rapid population increase and industrial growth has been expanded along the Nasirabad valley. The southern plain land areas primarily shows mixed residential character, although vast coastal area in the south and west remain for agricultural uses. Among all geomorphic units, the hilly area in the north is the most dynamic part of the city showing rapid and illegal landscape alteration, mostly for housing plots, without following any planning controls. On the other hand the extensive coastal plain lands get little development attention, both at policy and implementation stage. Like many other cities in Bangladesh, a very little attention to geomorphological knowledge is given as a tool for urban planning and development in Chittagong city.
