Testimonies Of Livelihood And Agriculture Losses Due to Climate Change In Himalaya

In a series of Mountain Voice, the Climate Himalaya team captured the voices of mountain people from the western Himalayan region of India.

We came across the real situation while interacting with various members of communities in this region. We witnessed that they don’t know about the statistics on the level of warming or precipitation, but their observations are the testimony of changes in the mountain farming systems in terms of low productivity, the hardship they face to fetch water, the increase in the pest diseases, more dry spells and health concerns.

With the decrease in agriculture productivity, increasing family size and divided land mass, fragmented development and poor technical know-how on various livelihood and farm based options, they have only added to the hardship of mountain people. When one observes their daily life style and the desires they have, you will come to know that they are struggling for basics like food, shelter and fodder.

They are ignorant about the government programs, the scientific research projects in their area, the technological advancement due to such projects, the best practices or cases our leaders talk in various global forums, the presentations our scientists and researchers read in mega conferences, the peer reviewed publication in an international journal, etc.. The only thing they know is that they need to survive their own on daily basis and there are not many options available in government jobs (in army or teaching), a nearby private job or in opening a petty business, but, they need to own the situation, even when the weather or climatic conditions are unfavorable.
